Adjacent to the 1982 World’s Fair’s gleaming Sunsphere beacon, the 300+ room Marriott in Downtown Knoxville brings renewed verve to the city. Stonehill Taylor’s makeover of the property included a newly painted exterior with accents of colorful murals, updated guestrooms, and the design of the new Maker Exchange, a 12,000-square-footgathering space. Connected to the Maker Exchange is over 13,000-square-feet of event space.
For this project—a reflagging and renovation of a Holiday Inn—Stonehill Taylor paid homage to the city’s history, while also shining a spotlight on Knoxville’s maker culture by showcasing the work of local artisans. Handcrafted wood furnishings and lighting by a local metalworker are enhanced by a palette of blues, browns, greys, and textures like nutty fabrics and leathers. The potentials of wood and glass are explored as a nod to the hand of the maker with pieces by a local textile artist introducing subtle craft elements.
