Refinery Hotel

New York, NY

Originally built in 1912, The Refinery Hotel is a creative reiteration of the building’s previous tenants–high end retail, a tea salon, and various factories (primarily hat making). This duality is reflected in the refined public spaces in the lobby area and a more industrial and raw elegance in the guestrooms and rooftop bar. The new design reinterprets the neo-gothic details with features such as the lobby’s manufactured white plaster groin vaulted ceilings and the warm wood used throughout the bar, Winnie’s Tea Lounge, and the reception area. The guestrooms emanate the original hat-making factories with the use of concrete ceilings, distressed hardwood floors, sewing machine inspired desks, and other factory inspired FF&E.

The expansive rooftop bar provides a year-round rooftop hangout with three sections: indoor, indoor-outdoor, and outdoor. The main feature is the ceiling of the indoor lounge space, which was made with wood salvaged from the dismantled water tank previously at the top of the building.
