The opening of the Aloft Philadelphia Downtown required the revival of the landmarked Liberty Title & Trust Building, a former bank, for modern use. Inspired by Philadelphia’s important historic past and the more contemporary public art, the design concept focuses on bridging the gap between old and new. The team sought to revitalize the traditional architectural features of the original 1925 bank building while introducing vibrant and contemporary artwork, patterns, and textures. Nods to the city’s history are found in the depiction of the Liberty Bell on the lobby, liberty-bell inspired chandeliers, and the vintage safety deposit boxes from Liberty Title & Trust adorning an oversized bookshelf and lead the eye up to the 20-foot-high, soaring coffered ceilings lined with ornate 20th century medallions.
